Announcing the ‘Legacy Lab’ for male fertility R&D
Male fertility is one of the most severely under-funded, under-researched topics in the reproductive space.
We know that male fertility has declined 50%, we know that sperm DNA fragmentation increases with age, we know that men are equally responsible for infertility as women, but we still don’t know why.
Catch me talking about this at the Beat Infertility Summit tomorrow — “Infertility is not a Women’s Issue.”
Our team wants to help fix this. On Monday, I annnounced a $25,000 grant for any researcher studying the impact of COVID-19 on male fertility. But there’s so much more we want to do.
Today I am proud to announce the launch of Legacy Lab — the first CLIA-approved, FDA-registered laboratory run by a fatherhood company. The Lab will be a hub for research and development — tapping into the skills of our team of healthcare and fertility experts — to create and test industry-leading products for all fathers and future fathers.
We have been working — and will continue to work — with industry-leading andrology labs to conduct full semen analyses for our clients. Because having the oversight and guidance of leading experts — like those on our advisory board — has been critical to our success and growth as a company — and that won’t change. But will expand our capacity and our ability to innovate. Here’s how:
First, it gives us even greater control over security. We already go to extreme lengths to protect our clients’ sperm samples. We are the only company in the world offering multi-site cryogenic storage for our clients, to protect against the long-tail risk of natural disaster, tank breakdown, or even human error. We divide each sample into 4 tanks that are stored across 2 geographic locations. Our long-term goal is to offer the ‘nuclear bunker’ option in Switzerland, where the company was originally founded, for all our clients.
Second, because it gives greater control over the quality. We have the most rigorous analysis of any company in the at-home market. From a sample, we test for volume, count, concentration, motility, and morphology. We analyze over 100 data points to generate a personalized report. If you need help at any point throughout the process, we offer 24/7 on-call assistance. We strive to provide Mayo Clinic-grade analysis from the comfort of your own home, so that we can. The Legacy R&D Lab will make sure we are meeting that goal, always.
Finally, It gives us greater control over accessibility. Today we have the fastest turnaround time for an at-home male fertility kit, a benefit clients continue to tell us is important in their decision-making. We believe overseeing the entire process will allow us to deliver an even faster experience to our clients over time. To this end, we’ve based the laboratory in the central US to centralize distribution and logistics and help create new jobs outside of Boston.
As the leading fatherhood company, it’s our job to ensure we continue to innovate, especially at a time when people need it most. That we continue to improve the customer experience at every opportunity we have. And we will.
